Trying to describe
living in Springfield in a few brief web pages is all but impossible.
Neither is it our intent to try to list all of the lifestyle choices
available. Rather, consider this an overview of some of the key facts
about Springfield, then click across to the Links
section and follow some of the links that interest you. Two of the
more comprehensive linked sites are those of the City
of Springfield and the Springfield
Convention & Visitors Bureau.
So, what's Springfield
like? We're a medium size city with a genuine sense of community.
We're the largest city in a 300 mile diameter area and, as such,
Springfield has evolved as a regional center for finance, medicine,
education, the arts, shopping and entertainment...virtually every
aspect of life. Consequently, we enjoy the benefits of larger cities
while retaining the close-knit character of much smaller ones.
Weather-wise,
we enjoy four distinct seasons. Winters are mild, with average highs
of 41.6 degrees in January. Springs and Falls are mild and long
and showcase the city's spectacular foliage (among our nicknames
is the "City of Trees"). And summers are warm and sunny,
with average high temperatures of 89.5 degrees in August. Many consider
it an ideal climate and this is how the National Weather Service
summarizes it: "As a result of this advantageous location,
the city and surrounding territory enjoy what is described as a
plateau climate. The winter season in the Ozarks has temperatures
considerably milder than in the upland, plain or prairie, and in
the summer the ozarks are appreciably cooler."
What
Do We Do?
And
what do we do with that good weather? In a word: Everything.
Springfield
and the surrounding area is a outdoorsman's paradise. Three sparkling
lakes lie within an hour's drive of town, as do the Mark Twain National
Forest and countless rivers, streams and trails. The city itself
boasts a dynamic and growing parks system, with 51 parks including
the new (and growing) center-city Jordan Valley Park with its indoor
Ice Park, greenspaces, and convention center and baseball park (both
under construction). The city is also home to a growing network
of linear parks for hiking and cycling.
Springfield
is also enjoys a thriving Arts community. Local symphony, ballet
and opera companies regularly perform to packed houses and Springfield
Little Theater is the oldest continuously performing community theater
group west of the Mississippi River. Similarly, Hammons Hall for
the Performing Arts brings Broadway shows and top tier performers
to town in a full season of entertainment. Add to that local art
and history museums, and the annual Arts Fest and it's clear the
arts are alive in well in Springfield.
Indeed, Springfield
thrives. From local coffee houses to haute cuisine. From community
softball to Minor League baseball. And from downtown lofts to sprawling
country estates. Springfield offers a richness and diversity of
life to that's the envy of many. Take a look around...we think you'll
agree.
